Kybella: The Who, What, Where, Why, and How of Fat Melting Injections
Summer is coming. Are you thinking about dropping those last few stubborn bits of fat before heading to the beach? Do you want your double chin to become just a single chin again? Are you at a healthy weight, but have some spots of fat that won’t go away?
The answer to your prayers may be Kybella fat melting injections. Kybella is a highly specialized procedure that takes training, skill, and expertise to do right – Dr. Jegasothy has all 3 in spades. Let’s break this treatment down and talk about what it can do for you.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is a non-surgical, injectable treatment that was FDA-approved in 2015 to reduce double chins and other stubborn fat deposits around the jawline and neck area. It is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which naturally occurs in your body. Deoxycholic acid breaks down and absorbs fat cells from the area of treatment. This article goes a little deeper into the science behind it. Essentially, Kybella is Garfield (the big, orange cat), and the fat particles are lasagna. Garfield loves to gobble lasagna.
Both the Kybella and the melted fat are eventually passed out of your body as waste. The important point here is that the effects are permanent. Once devoured, your fat cells will not come back. While weight gain may bring fat back to the area, if you maintain a healthy weight, the fat should not come back. Ever.
While initially approved by the FDA to treat stubborn fat deposits in the chin and neck areas, it has some effective off-label uses as well.
The Queen of Kybella, Dr. Jegasothy has used her expert knowledge and years of practice to pioneer its usage to treat other stubborn fat deposits. Dr. Jegasothy was the first US physician fully-approved to inject Kybella for body sculpting and injectable body fat reduction.
You read that correctly: she was the first doctor in the country to gain approval to inject Kybella in places other than the neck and jawline.
What does Kybella treat?
Kybella is mainly used to treat stubborn fat deposits that diet and exercise leave behind on the chin area and the neck (like the dreaded double chin). It is a fantastic option for treating other regions with fat deposits beneath the skin, such as around the armpits, belly, thighs, buttocks or love handles! If you’re looking to reduce excess area fat and smooth out some unsightly areas, consider Kybella. As with any dermatological treatment, be sure to consult a qualified, board-certified doctor first so that you get the results you want.
Where on the Body Can Kybella Melt Fat?
Here is a short list of the conditions we can treat with Kybella injections:
- Love Handles
- Belly Fat
- Bra-Line Fat
- Thigh Fat
- Arm Fat
- Fat on Buttocks
Who is a Good Candidate for Kybella Injections?
Kybella isn’t recommended for everyone. Ideal patients are within 10 to 15 percent of ideal body weight (or a BMI of 28 or less). Good candidates for Kybella include those who have decent skin elasticity, and who are at or close to a healthy weight.
Regardless of gender or age, many people have experienced the great benefits of Kybella fat melting injections.
While the results from Kybella are permanent, if one gains significant weight afterwards, fat can reappear in treated areas. So, Kybella isn’t a total replacement for a healthy diet and exercise. It’s a superb supplement to them.
How does Kybella Work?
Most people think Kybella is a quick fix. The injection is fast. Our procedures usually take around 10 minutes. However, the results happen gradually. Kybella treatments require patience to see the full results. Results should take about 1-3 months but may start showing sooner depending on the individual. Many of our patients opt for 3 Kybella treatments, although because individual results vary we may recommend more or fewer. We space out the visits so results from the last treatment should be fully realized before the next one.
How Long Do the Results Last?
Forever. Once a fat cell has been melted by Kybella, there’s no force on earth that can bring it back. That doesn’t mean one can never grow fat again though, so don’t treat it like a magical anti-fat solution.
How is the Recovery from Kybella Treatments?
The procedure involves a series of injections to deliver precise amounts of Kybella to targeted regions of persistent fat deposits. While some patients experience some discomfort or a mild stinging sensation, numbing cream is available at our office. Most of the discomfort afterwards can be managed with Tylenol (acetaminophen) and ice packs. We specifically recommend Tylenol and not other OTC painkillers as they may promote bruising.
Generally, there is very little in the way of recovery time after a Kybella treatment. In her decades of practicing aesthetic dermatology, Dr. Jegasothy has developed a very light injection technique intended to reduce bruising. Patients may still have some bruising. Ice packs for the affected areas will help.
Don’t massage the treated areas afterwards as that can irritate the injection sites. Smoking, and alcohol consumption are both best avoided immediately after the procedure for a few days as they can increase bruising, thin the blood, and increase the time your skin takes to heal.
