Kybella: The Who, What, Where, Why, and How of Fat Melting Injections

Who is a Good Candidate for Kybella Injections?

Kybella isn’t recommended for everyone. Ideal patients are within 10 to 15 percent of ideal body weight (or a BMI of 28 or less). Good candidates for Kybella include those who have decent skin elasticity, and who are at or close to a healthy weight.

Regardless of gender or age, many people have experienced the great benefits of Kybella fat melting injections.

How does Kybella Work?

Most people think Kybella is a quick fix. The injection is fast. Our procedures usually take around 10 minutes. However, the results happen gradually. Kybella treatments require patience to see the full results. Results should take about 1-3 months but may start showing sooner depending on the individual. We space out the visits so results from the last treatment should be fully realized before the next one.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Forever. Once a fat cell has been melted by Kybella, there’s no force on earth that can bring it back. That doesn’t mean one can never grow fat again though, so don’t treat it like a magical anti-fat solution.

How is the Recovery from Kybella Treatments?

The procedure involves a series of injections to deliver precise amounts of Kybella to targeted regions of persistent fat deposits. While some patients experience some discomfort or a mild stinging sensation, numbing cream is available at our office. Most of the discomfort afterwards can be managed with Tylenol (acetaminophen) and ice packs. We specifically recommend Tylenol and not other OTC painkillers as they may promote bruising.

Generally, there is very little in the way of recovery time after a Kybella treatment. In her decades of practicing aesthetic dermatology, Dr. Jegasothy has developed a very light injection technique intended to reduce bruising. Patients may still have some bruising. Ice packs for the affected areas will help.

Don’t massage the treated areas afterwards as that can irritate the injection sites. Smoking, and alcohol consumption are both best avoided immediately after the procedure for a few days as they can increase bruising, thin the blood, and increase the time your skin takes to heal.

Should I get a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Your choices are your own, although only fools dismiss relevant data when making a decision. Any elective surgery has risks, but the BBL is risky enough that in 2018, British doctors, were asked to voluntarily stop performing BBLs until more research into safe practices could be done. No one can say for sure if the scar on his face made Tony Montoya into the notorious killer and drug lord. Certainly, the distinct mark of trauma on the left side of his face did not help. Scars are part of living, and we accumulate them throughout life. Whether caused by a surgical procedure or traumatic incident, scars are rarely our proudest features (that one memorable scene from Jaws aside).

We don’t remove scars at Miami Skin Institute. Scar removal (also called scar revision) is performed by surgeons who cut out the scar tissue and suture the skin back together, hopefully making a much less noticeable line. There are a few potential issues with this method of scar removal. Besides, one needn’t be a philosopher to notice the inherent contradiction in using surgery to remove a scar…Fortunately, modern medical advances provide new methods to eliminate the unsightly evidence of surgeries and trauma.

At Miami Skin Institute, we treat scars. We treat them like fugitives from a dermatological jail. We don’t remove them, we make them disappear. Forever.

Disappearing Scars?!?

Yes. Mostly. We utilize a complementary pair of treatments to reduce the appearance of scars, and help rebuild healthy collagen in the area. As a result, those scars blend into the skin almost entirely. Removing the tissue is an unnecessary surgery when we can make the scars blend in and look like normal skin again. Our patients typically see an 80-90% reduction in the appearance of scars in the short term, and in 2-3 years the skin’s fibroblasts renew the area to the point that scars are almost entirely blended with the healthy skin.

Say Hello to My Little Friends: Laser Treatments for Scar Effacement

For scar effacement, we use a powerful pair of laser treatments that nearly erase scars all together. Scar reduction starts with the Vbeam Laser by Candela. After the Vbeam, we use the Fraxel Laser to complement the results.

What does the Vbeam Laser do?

Well, the scientific explanation is pretty involved, but the results are pretty simple. Clinical studies show that 100% of scars treated with Vbeam Laser treatments show visible improvement. Dr. Jegasothy has been using the Vbeam Laser for decades. Over the past 24 years since it received FDA approval, she has used it to treat a variety of skin conditions. The Vbeam Laser reduces the appearance of scars by making the scar tissue appear more like regular skin. Scar tissue has more active blood cells than normal skin. Vbeam Lasers reduce the discoloration by making them less metabolically active and more like the surrounding skin tissue. And the Fraxel Laser?

Fraxel is a newer product than Vbeam. It’s been FDA approved for our purposes since around 2005. Dr. Jegasothy has been using it since it was first released. The Fraxel Laser helps by stimulating the growth of healthy collagen which, in turn, helps the scar tissue blend into the skin even more.

Who can Fraxel and Vbeam Help?

Almost anyone. Our procedures are appropriate for adults of any age, but we have had children as young as 12 with various traumatic scars achieve great, lasting results from our scar erasing treatments. Typically, we will use a numbing cream on children to reduce discomfort (adults are welcome to it as well!). You Said Trauma…What Types of Trauma Leave Scars?

Accidents, falls, assaults, even animal bites are all types of trauma that may leave scars. While we cannot erase the memory of the event, we can make the obvious, external reminders harder to see.

When Should I Start Scar Reduction?

2-3 weeks after the surgery or trauma. Dermatologists used to ask patients to wait 4-6 months after surgery or trauma to have the scar erasure done. However, new research has shown that we get better results the sooner we start treatments. Typically, we aim for a few days after the stitches are out, or 2-3 weeks after the trauma. If the trauma was caused by an animal bite, we need to be sure there isn’t any lingering infection in the tissue, but a few weeks after the bite is usually sufficient. The treatments are very quick, and some positive results are immediate. The full visible effects will be mostly complete about 3 weeks after the procedure. While each client is different, most patients come for 3 sessions of scar reduction treatments. We space them out 4-6 weeks, so our patients can see the positive effects of their last Vbeam and Fraxel Laser application before they come for the next. If patients need to space out their treatments for budgetary reasons, that is fine, but for optimal results, we want to do the first treatment as soon as possible.

How long will the results last?

Forever. Seriously. There’s no maintenance to be done. Patients should see immediate improvement, which will continue to develop over a few weeks. The internal healing will continue for around 3 years, helping to further reduce the appearance of scarred tissue.

FDA-approved in 2004, Sculptra is a fantastic option for the nonsurgical butt lift. It is a type of dermal filler. While dermal fillers may have a rather unsavory name, they are wondrous products. There have been reports of unfortunate results for some people who’ve used dermal fillers. Usually, these negative experiences are due to a lack of training and education on the part of the provider. That is why we strongly recommend a trained, experienced, board-certified doctor for injectable treatments. Sculptra Injections for a Nonsurgical Butt lift

Sculptra is not primarily focused on immediate results although it will add some noticeable fullness to the skin. Sometimes referred to as a biostimulatory filler, the real magic of Sculptra comes in the weeks that follow a treatment. What Sculptra does (aside from making your buttocks look more full and round) is kickstart your collagen production; rejuvenating your skin slowly over the course of weeks and months. The positive results can last for years. Some patients continue to see the effects up to 5 years after their treatments. The reasons Sculptra is highly recommended by Dr. Jegasothy are the gradual and natural-looking results it gives. Our patients typically see a 10-20% enhancement in their buttocks from each Sculptra treatment. Many of our patients opt for two Sculptra injections. We space them 2-3 months apart. The full effects of a treatment are typically seen after about 6 weeks but one may see improvement for even longer.

Nonsurgical Butt Lift Part 2: Ultherapy

We may recommend Ultherapy in addition to Sculptra. This is a completely non-invasive procedure that uses microfocused ultrasound technology to deliver targeted energy that contracts and tightens your collagen. Dr. Jegasothy’s extensive experience with Ultherapy means she will be able to target the exact spots on your body with the precise levels of energy required to produce optimal results.

Most mothers in the past forty years have used ultrasound to check on the health and growth of a fetus. As an ultrasound-based technology, Ultherapy is effective, completely safe, and has minimal potential side-effects.

Ultherapy works over a period of months to lift and tighten skin. Immediate results are not the goal and shouldn’t be expected. The real objective is to stimulate the body’s natural processes for healthy skin. Treated areas will continue to improve for up to six months after the therapy and the positive results can last for years.

“How long will my treatments take?”

Each treatment we do takes about 10-15 minutes. If a client wishes to have numbing cream applied before, there may be an additional 10 minutes of time for the cream to work.

“Which is the better option for me?”

Facelifts are over one hundred years old. The procedure was developed in a textbook in 1907 although the first actual facelift would come 9 years later. The procedure has been improved over time, however surgical face-lifts are still surgery. Many individuals resist the surgical option for various, good reasons. Did you say Dermal Filler?

Okay, “Dermal Filler” is no one’s favorite word combination. It doesn’t sound great, but fillers are amazing products that come in the form of soft gels. They work immediately to fill areas with lost volume, and smooth lines. Many dermal fillers also stimulate collagen production, and in conjunction with Ultherapy, your collagen stimulation gets a serious jumpstart.

What About Pre and Post Treatment Care?

There is no preparation for the nonsurgical facelift and no post-procedure care, either! However, we do generally recommend avoiding direct, prolonged sunlight for a week for optimal recovery. Some patients experience mild, temporary tenderness, redness, or swelling, but they quickly fade. You can resume normal activities immediately after your treatment (try that with a surgical facelift)!
